“ I don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive.” – Joseph Campbell

Agya Dhaugoda and Kathy McKerrow

We were 20 students ranging from Nepal, the country of the Himalayas to Australia, the land down under via Nigeria to the Finnish Arctic circle. We are the second batch of students to the Outdoor and Adventure Education program. This course is conducted in English.

This is our first week. Being a diverse international group from 13 different countries, we had many games and activities to help us get to know each other. We met not only our own group but Erasmus exchange students and Finnish community educator students.

Icebreaker games and rope exercises designed to build trust were loads of fun. Although we played a lot of games we got to see outdoor teaching methods. Fun games, lots of laughing and learning, Adventure Education in a nutshell.

The biggest challenge was learning to work in a diverse group with different cultural backgrounds and functioning as a team. Our future challenge is navigating our self-directed learning program, developing our self-awareness and discovering our learning styles. HUMAK provides the safe and supportive environment.

Setting for success methodology has started. Basic technical and safety skills are already being taught. We will be geared up and ready to rock Ylläs in 2 weeks. Our learning diary will help us keep track of our professional development. We are locked and loaded, Ylläs-Pallas expedition….bring it on! Adventure Education bring it on!!

Our learning environments are outdoor adventure based, digital and real-world work situations. The Ylläs-Pallas expedition is our first real-life adventure. We will hike and camp for 2 weeks in beautiful Lapland. Exciting!

The digital platform, BB Open supports us with our theoretical knowledge of outdoor and adventure education. We check lecture notes and get feedback on our learning tasks both individually or as a group. Our classmates will keep you posted as we live life riding the Adventure Education wave. Map and compass are in our hands! Here we go! Welcome!
